IW: Every time I tell someone I have never seen Titanic before they act like I just kicked their puppy, I thought this was funny so I decided I WASNT going to ever see Titanic because there is no way that it could ever live up to the absurd hype and I liked being a contrarian. Also, that movie is the reason My Heart Will Go On exists and that song is an act of terrorism. But then one Miss Gabbie Veseli found out I have never seen Titanic, gave me her own “what do you mean you’ve never seen Titanic!?!?!?!” and then I let her make me watch it because I Am Open To New Experiences Sometimes. I’ll be honest, I was expecting to not like it and then to write a SCATHING yet witty review but unfortunately…….. That movie is so fucking good. Kate Winslet’s weird breathy accent is terrible and so is the score but virtually everything else about this movie was genuinely so good. The thick sweaters that the captain of the scavenger crew wears, the ornate cabins with literal sitting rooms, Kathy mother fucking bates!!!! I don’t think I expected to care about these characters because I have known how this movie ends for most of my life but Jesus christ did it break my heart when Jack grabs Rose’s face after she jumps off the lifeboat and voice cracking says “you’re so stupid Rose” (that is all I will say about that scene because I feel confident that Gabbie has 200 words dedicated to that moment in her review). That scene doesn’t make me cry, because I Don’t Cry In Movies but I will say I came close to being choked up when the violinist from the band says goodbye to the other musicians as they start to leave but then decides to stay and play until the very end and the others stop and turn around and join him. Like dead children? eh. Families being separated? that's happening rn. But the MUSICIANS standing there and pouring everything they have into a song until they DIE!?!?!? That’s the most beautiful and heartbreaking moment of this beautifully heartbreaking movie. So I guess it’s time to retire the part of my personality where I smugly tell people I’ve never seen Titanic. My heart will go on is still my least favorite song though.

GV: “You’re so stupid Rose” When Jack scoops Rose up in his arms after she jumps back on the ship from the lifeboat and yells this in her face in between kissing her and holding her close all my breath leaves my body and I cry a little. This movie is more than three hours long, but it doesn’t feel close to a waste of time. In fact, it’s probably the most useful way I can imagine spending three and a half hours of my life.

Immediately after watching Titanic with Isabel, I knew I had to add this movie quote to my phone case. Yes, I have a clear phone case, and inside are speech bubbles of silly movie quotes. And to debate with Isabel here for a moment: this score is amazing. I’ll let her believe that Rose’s breathy accent is annoying even though I don’t really mind it, but I will not let her get away with saying the score is bad just because she cringes at My Heart Will Go On. Leaving Port, “Take Me to Sea, Mr. Murdoch”, An Irish Party In Third Class, are just a few of the songs from Titanic that make my heart truly feel something. Other things from titanic that make my heart feel something: anytime Fabrizio is on screen, the dress Rose is wearing when Cal yells at her, Mr. Andrews fixing the clock as the ship is sinking, when Cal yells “I put the coat on her”, Jack’s speech about how he lives his life at the dinner in first class, and the entire Irish dancing scene in third class. If it was socially acceptable I would watch this movie weekly, but really whose stopping me?
