IW: This movie holds a very special place in my heart but at the same time, it is such an obvious rip off of clueless I am having a difficult time reckoning my feelings about it. Emma is one of my favorites books and I was a little nervous about dragging Gabbie to a 9:30 pm movie showing for an adaptation of classic literature, things could’ve gone sideways fast. Instead, I was dazzled with Autumn De Wilde’s candy-colored interpretations of one of the greatest love stories I have ever read. One of my favorite parts of the book was how detailed every single character was (bitches LOVE side characters and I am, as always, bitches) and De Wilde brought all of the odd and endearing characters of Hartfield to life. From Mr. Woodhouse’s ensembles that almost match the upholstery, to Mrs. Elton, truly one of the most exhausting characters I have ever encountered. But it's Anya Taylor-Joy’s precise and sly performance as one of Austen’s most famous characters that make this movie work, you can’t make Emma without the right Emma. There is something truly special about getting to experience a story that you love so deeply brought to life with the care and attention it deserves and Emma certainly falls into that category. But the thing that is so incredible to me about Austen and this adaptation of Emma is not only the story, talented director, and fabulous sets and costumes but the simple fact that this movie is truly sexy. You see nothing more than an innocent butt (Mr. Knightley shake that ass!) and one or two kisses but the chemistry and electricity that radiates off of Knightley and Emma ras they dance at the ball is so fucking palpable that I would go as far to say it is hotter than most sex scenes I have seen and there is literally no skin to skin contact!!! How do they do it???  If I loved this movie less, maybe I would be able to talk about it more. I know how corny that is but shut up this movie makes me corny.

GV: Picture this: Isabel and I snickering in an almost entirely empty movie theatre just a few days before spring break and the unknown departure from one another, our last moment together before being quarantined. Oh, what a time. This movie made me feel things I didn't know I could feel. Like the desire for a real-life tangible relationship, crazy. I also had no idea that clueless was based on the story of Emma, that was fun. The aesthetics of this movie are so beautiful. The dynamic cuts between shots so close up I could see the gravity-defying curls of Emma’s hair and shots of gorgeous symmetrical scenery showing off places I dream of living in. The images of mint-colored reading room walls and decorated ensembles flickered through my mind when creating this collage. (Who knew a screen was for fixing a draft?) This movie defines a tender glance, the feeling of your hand brushing a person of interest and comfortable silence. I couldn't have picked a better movie to have seen in a theatre and I can’t wait to see another one hopefully soon.
